Artist Statement

Born in Seoul, Korea, and raised in northern Michigan by parents of French descent, I have been curious about correlation and relationality my entire life.

In statistics, variables can either increase or decrease in tandem with each other, or in opposition to one another, or have no discernible relationship to one another. As a contemporary dance artist with a strong admiration for post-modernism, these classifications are the core of my work.

I envision the dancers in my works as atoms bouncing off each other, scattering plots on graphing paper. My work is designed around the relationship between bodies moving in space and examines these statistical variables in physical performance. I’m interested in how these analytical relationships inform our interpersonal ones.

My overall goal as an artist can be summed up as follows: I aim to bring happiness to people. I create work that encourages joy in the audience; I use joy as a mode of creating the world I want to live in.

Offering joy to others is important to me because I have found that a happy person is also a dedicated and motivated one. Ultimately, the art that I create is driven by the desire to foster a rambunctious, abundant, and joyous community of activists.

I present work that is geometrically satisfying and minimalist, showcasing how simple societal issues are at their core. The notion of wanting our loved ones to be safe and happy is universal, and I ask, what grace do we offer to those we don’t yet know? The relationships presented in my work are about no one in particular and, therefore, reflective of a universal experience.

My work serves as a reminder to reconnect with humanity and empathy.
